Synopsis

Suzhou, known as Wu in ancient times, and now referred to as Su, is a city in the southeast of Jiangsu Province. It is located in the heart of the Yangtze River Delta and the Taihu Plain. It is a famous land of fish and rice, an important economic town, and a famous historical and cultural city, also known as "the Venice of the East." The topography of Suzhou City is relatively low and flat, with plains accounting for 54.8% of the total area, about 4 meters above sea level, and hills accounting for 2.7% of the total area. Suzhou has a subtropical monsoon oceanic climate with four distinct seasons and abundant rainfall. It is suitable for growing rice, wheat, rape, and also produces cotton, sericulture, forest fruits, etc.

Culture

For thousands of years, streets and lanes have been a very important part of the ancient city of Suzhou. They will use historical figures, cultural buildings, bridges, rivers and piers to name streets and lanes, such as Ganjiangfang Wangxing Bridge and so on.

Tea culture, like Biluochun also is a representative of Suzhou culture. According to historical records, Suzhou embroidery and the craftsmanship has prospered since the Song Dynasty. Suzhou’s architectural culture and Kunqu opera culture also are the one of the most famous culture in Suzhou. The cultural history of Gusu has accumulated very deep in the 2,500 years since the city was founded. With its unique style, it occupies an important position in the history of Chinese culture.

Cuisine

People praise Suzhou, describing it as “Heaven on Earth”. It’s a place with beautiful landscapes and prominent historical figures. Suzhou not only has enchanting scenery, but also delicious food. Suzhou dishes are generally on the sweet side and there are many varieties. After thousands of years of evolution,Suzhou cuisine now includes 12 varieties: Suzhou main dishes, sauced cold meat, pastries, cakes, sweets, fruit preserves, desserts, rice cakes and rice balls.
