English Medium Class and Distance Learning Workshop (2020)

Department of Nursing invited Professor Chen Shu-Li and have a workshop with the title of English Medium Class and Distance Learning on 6 December 2020 and 7 December 2020.

During the Distance Learning section, Professor Chen has found out some problems that most of the teachers are facing when using distance learning. For example, why the student doesn’t speak on the discussion board, why students hard to understand the content of teaching, and why students always been late submit their homework on eLearning. When teachers are unable to solve these problems, it will cause the teacher will feel powerless on their job and easily feel tired. Therefore Teachers unable to teach in high quality when those stress are still present.

In her teaching lesson, she requires her student must do a class preview because it will let the student be more easily understand the lesson when the teacher starts to teach. The first week and second week will be using the idea of the flipped classroom to teach. For example, group discussion, find out the problem, and so on. From week 3 to week 12, she will start using online teaching with some video, notes, tests, and online discussion. She hopes her lesson can inspire the student to have critical thinking and have the ability to solve the problem.

During the English Medium Class, Professor Chen has four principles, SMART and 5W in her lesson design idea. The four principles are Birds of a Feather Flock Together, Treat Others as You Would Like to be treated, Be Confident in What You Know and Admit What You Don’t Know and KISS, or Keep it Simple, Stupid。SMART will be Specific、Measurable、Attainable、Relevant and Time-based. 5W will be Why me, Why not me, What happened, How did I do it, and Who.

Professor Chen used her course -Professional Nursing in English as the axis, sharing distance teaching and how to Course with English as the teaching language. She also teaches how to design a suitable curriculum with English as the language of instruction
